Hand Forged Tools

As soon I set up my forge in 1999 I found I needed specialised tools for use in the workshop, the obvious answer was to forge them myself. Very shortly I started making tools to order, mainly green woodworking tools. Recently I have started designing a range of tools, consulting experts in the field and sending samples out for evalutation. This started with a collaboration with Mike Jarmain of Cambrian Survival- with his extensive experience and input I came up with my range of strikers and firelighting sets. My range of spoon knives and wood carving blades have also returned from testing having passed with flying colours and are included on these pages. Other tools are currently undergoing field testing, including adzes, axes, froes and slicks.

At present all tools on this site are supplied un handled, over the past few years selling tools I have found that opinions vary greatly as to what makes a good handle, it is also influenced greatly by the size of your hands. Most of these tools are aimed at experienced users whom I have found often prefer to put their own handles on anyway. I will be posting a simple guide on handling some of my carving blades. However if you have any questions about how to do this, or if you wish to commision a handled blade then please contact me.

All these tools have been forged, heat treated and ground, finally they are honed on diamond and japanese bench stones, to ensure a completely flat bevel they are then given a final polish on a leather strop loaded with polishing compound. The end result is that every tool sold on this site I have sharpened to the level I require when carving.
