I came up with this design of carver/ whitler as a way to smooth the the handle to blade transition on a finished knife, whilst still being very easy to assemble. The tang ( the part of the blade that fits into the handle) has a wide shoulder going all the way round it. This means that making the slot in the handle can be done very easily as a high level of accuracy is not needed to make a perfect fit, the tang can be simply glued in with epoxy. The blade is made from spring steel and whilst it will hold a great edge well it is not as hard as my laminated blades. This means that it is much easier to sharpen, being slightly softer it will form a definate burr when honed making it easy to know when it is time to switch sides or move on to a finer stone. Despite this I have found that these blades can be stropped on leather many times to restore the edge before sharpening on a stone is needed. They are sold in two basic styles a striaght edged wharncliffe and a rounded edged sloyd type. Of the two the belly in the sloyd allows for a greater range of cuts and makes for a more versatile blade. The warncliffe style is made approximately 10mm shorter than the sloyd type. These blades are all sold fully sharpened by hand to ensure flat bevels and a perfect cut.
Sold unhandled; you must be over 18 to purchase this blade.
